Dr Johnson’s House

Dr Johnson’s House is the surviving eighteenth-century townhouse at 17 Gough Square, just off Fleet Street, where Samuel Johnson compiled his Dictionary of the English Language. It is an outstanding address in the neighbourhood Cradle exists to celebrate.

Cradle has recorded in its parlour — Mitre Nights sat with curator Celine Luppo McDaid to ask why this tiny quarter of London became a magnet for creative energies, long before the newspaper industry took hold. The house remains a working museum of Johnson’s London.
