This strikingly attractive and highly visual website features stories and pictures associated with “Lives on The Strand: Past, Present, and Creative”. At one time marking the north bank of The Thames, before the Victoria Embankment was completed, The Strand connects Trafalgar Square, in the west, with Fleet Street in the east with Temple Bar marking the dividing line between the two.
Layers of London is an historically rich website featuring a trove of user-generated content – reflections, memories, images – located against the evolving map of London across the centuries. Its enduring fascination is illustrated in this photo of Temple Bar, located for many years at Fleet Street’s western end before being moved, in stages, to its present location near St Paul’s Cathedral.
